Katharine Ponza's biography

Katharine Ponza is originally from Sydney, Australia. She began dancing at age 3, at a local dance school, and in 1990 at 9 years old, began her studies at Sandra Fleeton Productions, where she would stay until she was 18. Through her teen years, Katharine performed with “SFP” around Australia in various children’s shows and fashion parades, and became a cheerleader with the Canterbury Bulldogs football team and the Western Sydney Slammers basketball team (now called the Razorbacks). In 2004, Katharine began studying at Sydney Dance Company, with a strong focus on Tap Dance and Musical Theatre.

In 2005, Katharine moved to New York City to continue her professional career at the famous Broadway Dance Center, and soon became a Protégé of Germaine Salsberg (internationally renowned Tap Dancer, Choreographer and Teacher).  Katharine has since had the honour or working with many luminaries and legends of the Tap Dance and Musical Theatre worlds, including Randy Skinner (Broadway Choreographer - 42nd Street, White Christmas), Ayodele Casel (“First Lady of Tap”), Diane “Lady Di” Walker, the Late Professor LaVaughn Robinson, Harold Cromer, Miriam Nelson (who choreographed such greats as Doris Day and Rita Hayworth), The Silver Belles, and Gail Pennington (Broadway: 42nd St, A Chorus Line, Crazy For You) to name just a few. Over the past 3 years, Katharine has performed in such productions as the New York City Tap Festival’s “Tap City”, Tradition In Tap NYC, Tap Extravaganza, and the New Choreographer’s Workshop, as well as an Off-Broadway run in TapOle Dance Company In Concert, and she is a regular on US television.

Today, 26 year old Katharine teaches Tap Dance at Broadway Dance Center, where she has developed a following both as a Teacher and as a Choreographer, and is working as Teaching/Choreography Assistant to both Gail Pennington and Germaine Salsberg. Katharine performs with Salsberg’s four-member tap company "Les Femmes". She is also the Assistant Director/Choreographer of the “TapOle Dance Company” and has been hired to Choreograph such shows as "Fascinatin' Gershwin" (to be seen throughout the US and Canada in 2008).

In 2007, Katharine was honoured with a Citation from the Mayor of New Jersey, USA, for her contribution to the Arts - in particular, the Dance community. She contemplates offers from Las Vegas’ “Jubilee”, the National Tour of the hit show “The Producers”, and the Asia Tour of “42nd Street”.
